Norah Head Lighthouse

This weekend past (Sat 24th Oct) we visited the Norah Head Lighthouse.
You can to do tours of the lighthouse at a small charge.  Unfortunately on the  day we were there the tours were already  booked out,  so we had to be satisfied with looking through the small museum that is housed below the light.  When we mentioned we were from the JB Maritime Museum they were eager to show us some of the ship wreck relics that are housed in another area that the public don’t usually get to see. That was a great experience and very interesting.   The volunteers were very helpful and friendly,  ‘just like ours!

If your travelling north make it one of your ports of call, you won’t be disappointed.

Memorial to the often forgotten lost merchant sailors in World War Two.

One of the fascinating things we were told, was the design for the lighthouse tower is exactly the same as the Cape St George Lighthouse.

They have a selection of the original signal flags used on the “flag staff” to convey messages to passing ships,  as well as other relics from the lights long history of operation.

Designed by – Charles Assinder Harding – who also designed Cape Byron Light and Point Perpendicular Light.   It is the last to be designed in this style.
Construction commenced in 1901.  It was officially lit on 15 November 1903.
